SRI LANKA
+ July 27, 2018
While moving through different Bawa designed spaces past few days here in Sri Lanka, I found the potential of various areas that had inherently different atmospheres. The long views merge into the landscape, careful composition of the interior elements, deliberate circulation turns camouflage into beautiful courtyards and cantilever clay tile roofs generate infinite numbers of spatial experiences. The seamless play in the materials with a gradient of light and shade creates a sense of mystery and anticipation. After visiting eight different projects, I found a logical system of longitudinal and transverse axes wrapped around a stunning tropical landscape. There is a clear reflection of the English landscape movement in Bawa's plan that also tells his unruly temperament and casual approach to life.
